Fashion designer Carly Cushnie’s wedding was as gorgeous as expected

Few weddings include a full runway show, but fashion designer Carly Cushnie (of the Cushnie and Ochs label) ‘s wedding to Oscar Cantú was far from typical. (It’s not that their engagement, by Luc d’Annecy near the French Alps, is even a little basic either.) The fabulous celebration took place in Mexico City, a place where weddings typically include 600 to 800 people and last all night. It included the chic evening of 160 parades with Mexican and Jamaican flags and a group of 32 ceremonial musicians at the Temple of the Enseñanza instead of the garden’s secret reception venue, the Club de Banqueros. “It was one of the most magical parts,” Carly says of the event that interrupted traffic in the city on a busy Friday afternoon.

Indeed, there was palpable energy throughout the day, which the couple curated with the help of Oaxaca-based planner Marcela Gonzalez over the course of six months. (The wedding was originally supposed to take place in Oaxaca, but they moved it due to the Zika outbreaks and ultimately it was so perfect the couple thought it was meant to be.) “All the flowers were white and green, “says Carly,” I wanted the whole place to feel very enchanted, romantic and lush. Other priorities were great food and music, two must-haves for any destination weddings!

And in true Mexico City form, the excitement lasted for hours – the ceremony started at 3:00 p.m. and the dance ended around 3:00 a.m. during which Oscar serenaded his bride-to-be on the street with his father and a group of mariachis – and ended with a boat cruise through Mexico City. Understandably, the bride wore a bespoke lace, tulle, and chiffon gown from her own label, Cushnie and Ochs, for her big time. “I wanted the dress to be romantic and feminine, with a Mexican influence,” which manifested in the dramatic ruffle neckline. She accessorized with her “something old” and “something borrowed” (a diamond bracelet), her “something blue” (an evil eye pin) and wore earrings from Ryan Storer .

The wedding party included Carly’s sister and best friend, both of whom wore pale pink adaptations of Cushnie and Ochs, and three bridesmaids in white dresses from Drenna Luna.

Oscar’s family priest from Arizona, Father David San Fillipo, traveled to Mexico City to officiate at the Catholic ceremony, which was preceded by the couple’s public service in New York two weeks earlier, where they held exchanged personal vows. Following their traditional vows at the church ceremony, Carly and Oscar stepped out of the classic “Besame Mucho” bolero as a nod to their location.

And as a nod to their original wedding venue, the couple took part in an Oaxacan parade through the city streets, carrying Mexican and Jamaican flags representing their heirlooms. The trip, which brought the city’s busy traffic to a halt on Friday afternoon, ended at Club de Banqueros, where guests munched on Mexican appetizers and Mezcalini cocktails while DJ Huggy Bear played tunes.

The arches and high ceilings of Club de Banqueros originally sold the couple to Club de Banqueros, which they transformed into a lush wonderland. The wedding venue was founded when Mexico was under colonial rule in 1548. Its colonial origins are evident in the building’s design; however, contemporary additions have been made in recent years.

For the evening, tea lights hung from the ceiling (creating a starry sky effect!) And assorted green and white flower arrangements with candles decorated tables below.

Delicious food and great music were important to the couple, and on a classic Oaxacan band led by Gil Sanchez, guests ate a three-course dinner that included ceviche, duck confit tostadas, stuffed zucchini flowers. with ricotta and suckling pig or red snapper, followed by a coconut flan for dessert.

The newlyweds danced their first dance to “Good Times” (from The Persuasions), which was remixed in Jamie XX’s version. Another memorable musical moment came courtesy of Carly’s sister, who surprised the bride with a personalized version of “She’s Royal” singer Tarrus Riley performed for the couple. Music from DJ Huggy Bear kept guests dancing until the early hours of the morning, as did midnight snacks of tortas and tacos.

But the party didn’t end there! The day after the wedding, the couple invited everyone to another celebration.

The party took place on colorful gondolas down Xochimilco, where guests munched on local dishes and danced to the beat of local musicians. “We wanted the wedding to be very Mexican to have the energy of the city and for the food and music to reflect that,” the bride said.
